Investment, trade in focus as Xi rolls out red carpet for Raisi

The story: 20 documents on cooperation reportedly worth over 10B USD have been signed during President Ebrahim Raisi's ongoing state visit to China. In his meetings with top officials and business representatives, Raisi has also highlighted common political interests in an apparent bid to future-proof relations. This comes as President Xi Jinping in a session with his visiting Iranian counterpart seemingly sought to address concerns of a Chinese shift towards Iran’s Arab regional rivals.

The coverage: Raisi on Feb. 14 arrived in Beijing where he met Xi and other top officials as part of his high-profile three-day visit to China.

  • In his meeting with the Chinese president, Raisi hailed Iran and China as "friends in times of hardship." The Iranian president called for increased bilateral cooperation in various fields, while Xi expressed Beijing's support for Iran in "safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity."
