Bahrainis fear Islamist tyranny in Syria

Over the years, Bahraini perspectives on events in Syria have varied and have been impacted by political or sectarian considerations. Some supported the ousted repressive Syrian regime out of fear of Turkish influence or the rise of the Islamic State group (IS). Others, who have been advocates for democracy and freedom in their own country, expressed support for the Syrian revolution and its demands.

Inspired by uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt which succeeded in toppling authoritarian regimes, popular protests erupted in Bahrain in Feb. 2011. However, the Bahraini uprising failed to achieve its demands, which included electing the government, ensuring judicial fairness, and creating a fully empowered....
