Exclusive: The ‘real reason’ Larijani’s presidential bid was quashed

For the second time in three years, moderate politician Ali Larijani has been barred from running in an Iranian presidential election, leaving many in shock. Despite apparent pressure from the religious establishment in Qom and the support of a litany of political operatives in Tehran, the Guardian Council has refused to budge on its decision. Rather than spelling the end of Larijani’s political career, the disqualification has put further spotlight on the criteria used to determine who may run for office.
