Exclusive: ‘US must substantiate that it can achieve return to JCPOA’

The story: Iran says the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal hinges on the US accepting responsibility for having walked away from it, agreeing to fully implement it and pledging not to leave the accord once again. This comes ahead of the upcoming resumption of diplomatic talks on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as the deal is formally known.

  • Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh on Nov. 8 asserted that the US must "accept culpability" for the current distraught state of the nuclear accord and "effectively remove all sanctions imposed after leaving the JCPOA in one go.”

  • Khatibzadeh also stated that Iran needs guarantees that "no US administration will make a mockery of the world and international law" by leaving the 2015 agreement once again. US president Donald Trump unilaterally walked away from the Barack Obama-era accord and reimposed all sanctions in 2018.
