Qatar gears up for historic elections amid voter controversy

The upcoming first elections for Qatar’s advisory Shura Council recently triggered a rare protest in Doha. The demonstration erupted amid heated debate over the country’s electoral law among certain tribes, as some have found themselves ineligible to vote.

 

Historic elections 

The historic elections for two-thirds of the council are scheduled for Oct. 2, according to the decree issued by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Qatari citizens will elect 30 members of the 45-seat council, while the Emir will appoint the remaining 15 members....
