Turkey boosts military footprint in Qatar in shadow of Trump’s potential return

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited Ankara earlier this month, where he met with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Aug. 8 meeting came amid the ongoing Israeli onslaught on Gaza, the rising tension between Iran and Israel—particularly following the July 31 assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran—and the nomination of Yahya Sinwar as Haniyeh’s successor.

In a 2.5-hour meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral, regional, and international issues of significance. They agreed to intensify their efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and establish a lasting peace regarding the Palestinian issue for the entire region.
