Why Sinjar is a growing focal point for Iraqi, regional competition

Turkey continues to strike targets in northern Iraq that it perceives to have ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). These targets include members of the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS), a Yazidi armed group which is part of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU). But regardless of the YBS’s status as an official component of Iraq’s military, it seems that Turkey intends to continue targeting it.

Ankara’s efforts in northern Iraq directly conflict with both Iranian and US interests, represented by the fiery rhetoric and reactionary violence following Turkish attacks.
