Nancy Ezzeddine is a research fellow at Clingendael’s Conflict Research Unit (CRU). In this capacity, she focuses on the prospects for political reform and renewal in the broader Middle East with a special focus on Iraq. Her recent work focuses on the interplay between sectarian constituencies, patronage politics, and social movements. Of note are her analyses of the mechanisms through which welfare economies legitimize and reinforce ruling elites, using Iraq’s social protection schemes as a case study.
