Iran’s conservatives signal assertiveness with fresh crackdowns

The story: In Iran, the authorities have launched a new crackdown on high-profile critics. A prominent Reformist activist and several filmmakers have been arrested in recent days.

The detentions come as conservatives are in parallel tightening the enforcement of veiling requirements for women, and also putting pressure on negotiators to avoid concessions in the talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.

The coverage: Reformist activist Mostafa Tajzadeh was on July 8 arrested over security-related charges.
