The story: As morality police redeploy in Iran, ambiguity surrounds the exact form of deployment. There is also confusion over which precise state organ is behind the move as no entity appears keen to openly assume responsibility.

Morality police disappeared after nationwide protests last autumn sparked by the death of a young woman while in its custody. The timing of the return of the hijab enforcement unit raises the stake in the battle over whether the Islamic dress code should be mandatory.

The coverage: Iran’s police force announced on July 16 that street patrols and vans had been reinstated to enforce the Islamic dress code for women.
