Foray into Africa boosts Qatar’s conflict mediation credentials

The story:  Rare Qatari mediation in Africa has helped facilitate the signing of a peace accord between Chad’s ruling transitional military council and more than 40 opposition parties. The Aug. 8 “Doha Peace Agreement” seeks to establish a national dialogue in the Sahelian country later this year, ahead of fresh presidential elections. Qatar has been mediating an end to fighting in Chad since March.

The coverage: The Qatari foreign ministry declared on Aug. 8 that the signing of the peace agreement will “pave the for the start of the comprehensive and sovereign national dialogue…with a view to achieving national reconciliation.”

  • Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani thanked “all parties that participated in the success of the agreement,” expressing hopes that “the remaining parties will engage [in dialogue]"...
