The story: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has welcomed the implementation of a UN-coordinated plan to prevent a catastrophic oil spill in the Red Sea. For years, the decaying FSO Safer oil tanker, moored near Yemen’s coast, has posed a major disaster risk. An international team has started to transfer 1.14M barrels of oil from the vessel to the UN-purchased Nautica tanker. Yemen’s internationally-recognized government and the Ansarullah movement, better known as the Houthis, have endorsed the plan.
The coverage: Riyadh-based Sabq News noted on July 25 that Saudi Arabia has contributed 10M USD to support the UN-brokered scheme.
