Has Ukraine joined Israel’s undeclared war with Iran?

The story: Iran says it has thwarted a drone attack on a military workshop during a reportedly eventful evening that saw alleged fires and explosions in several provinces.

Tehran has not officially assigned blame for the drone strike in the central city of Isfahan. However, speaking on condition of anonymity, a high-ranking political source in the Iranian capital indicated to Amwaj.media that Ukraine has been brought up as among the potential culprits. Echoing this line, the media affiliate of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has warned of “heavy consequences” unless the Ukrainian government distances itself from the attack. Meanwhile, others allege that Azerbaijan—whose embassy in Tehran was recently shuttered amid rising tensions—may also have played a role alongside Israel.

The coverage: Iran's defense ministry on Jan. 28 stated that it had thwarted an attack on one of its facilities in Isfahan.

  • The ministry said three small drones, or Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs), were used to target the facility but that one was shot down and two crashed.
