In rare appearance, daughters of Iran's Soleimani, Iraq's Muhandis vow revenge

The story: Zeinab Soleimani and Manar Al-Muhandis are making headlines after a rare appearance in Baghdad. The two spoke late on Jan. 2 at an event in the Iraqi capital marking the second anniversary of the assassination of their fathers. Zeinab is the daughter of the former commander of Iran’s Quds Force Qasem Soleimani while Manar is a child of ex-deputy chief of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis. Their appearance has generated sympathy and criticism in both Iran and Iraq.

The coverage: The Iranian and Iraqi military commanders were killed in a US drone strike on Jan. 3, 2020 near Baghdad’s international airport. The assassination was ordered by then US president Donald Trump.

Addressing a crowd which had gathered at the location of the killings, Soleimani stated that “the blood of her father and his comrades will not be forgotten” and chanted “down with America” in fluent Arabic...
