Iran hit by prison fire as ex-nuclear chief discourages empty threats

The story: At least eight people have been killed due to a fire in connection with unrest at Tehran’s Evin Prison. Videos filmed from outside the infamous detention facility in Iran’s capital indicate the sound of gunshots and explosions, prompting some to question whether the actual death toll is higher.

Meanwhile, as protests that the Islamic Republic blames on the west continue, a former atomic energy chief has urged the authorities to get messaging about the possibility of developing nuclear bombs straight.

The coverage: Multiple videos shared on social media in the late hours of Oct. 15 showed a blaze at Evin Prison in northern Tehran.

  • In one video, at least one object can be seen being thrown into the prison, quickly followed by the sound of an explosion and a flashing light.
