Iran signals dialogue, deterrence as US mulls escalation at sea

The story: Iran’s supreme leader has slammed reported US efforts to prevent Iranian tankers from sailing in international waters, insisting on free shipping for all. This comes as the US is bolstering its military presence in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, apparently driven by concerns that Tehran may try to capture western oil tankers. However, Iranian actions in past months are reported to partly have been retaliation for US seizures of Iranian oil.

In parallel with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s comments, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has showcased new capabilities during fresh exercises. The drills were notably held around an Iranian island claimed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
