Iran, Taliban step up engagement amid rare ‘joint’ intelligence operation

The story: Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has visited Iran at the head of a senior delegation. Baradar met with several high-ranking officials in Tehran with a focus on economic and security issues. In parallel, alleged agents of Israel have reportedly been detained in a rare joint operation between Iranian intelligence services and the Taliban. This comes as some Iranians continue to disapprove of recognition of Taliban rule—even as Tehran has interests in forging closer ties with the Afghan group.

The coverage: Baradar, the Taliban government's deputy prime minister, traveled to Iran earlier this month along with a 30-member delegation.
