First Iran-Taliban meetings in Kabul focus on trade, transit

The story: The governor of Iran’s northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi has traveled to Afghanistan to discuss border issues, trade and transit with Taliban officials. It is the first meeting between an Iranian delegation and the Taliban in the country since the Afghan group seized power in August. While Iran has not yet officially recognized the Taliban’s rule, the visit signals Tehran’s intentions to maintain peaceful ties.

The coverage: During a two-day trip to Afghanistan starting on Oct. 3, Mohammad Sadeq Motamedian, governor of Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, held meetings with the Taliban’s ministers of culture and information, commerce and industry, and economy.
