Deep Dive: Iraq overhauls mandate of spy agency amid concerns over IS resurgence

The story: Iraq’s parliament has passed a long-awaited law that overhauls the duties and jurisdiction of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS). The move comes amid growing concern over a possible resurgence of the Islamic State group (IS) following the collapse of Bashar Al-Assad’s rule in neighboring Syria. It also follows signaling from Baghdad about a keenness to curb Iran-backed Shiite armed groups.
