IRGC warns Saudi Arabia it must ‘control’ media ‘provoking our youth’

The story: The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned the Saudi royal family that it will “pay the price” unless it reins in the media outlets it allegedly funds. The warning comes as Tehran accuses foreign-based Persian-language networks—and especially the TV channel Iran International—of spreading fake news and inciting unrest.

The coverage: Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami on Oct. 17 accused Saudi Arabia of using news outlets it allegedly bankrolls to meddle in Iranian matters.

  • Speaking ahead of a military drill in northwestern Iran, the IRGC commander alleged that Riyadh is using its media empire to "interfere in our domestic affairs." Without naming any outlets, Salami accused them of "provoking our youth."

  • "I have a request for the Al Saud regime," Salami said, referring to the Saudi royal family, "Watch your behavior and control these media; otherwise, you will pay the price."

Though Salami did not explicitly name any outlets...
