Qatar's upcoming shura council elections mired in controversy

The story: A new law that governs public participation and candidate criteria in Qatar’s upcoming shura council elections in October has sparked protests around Doha. The law stipulates that naturalized citizens can only vote in the elections if the paternal grandfather was born in Qatar. Members of the Al-Murrah tribe have protested the latter, resulting in numerous arrests.
