Qatar frees Kenyan labor activist after international outcry

The story: Facing an international outcry, Qatar has released a labor activist after charging him with allegedly getting paid to spread “disinformation.” Malcolm Bidali, a Kenyan security guard who has worked in the Gulf state since 2016, had been blogging about the rights of migrant workers under a pseudonym over the past year. Human rights groups have been calling for his release, saying that his May 4 arrest was in retaliation for his activism.

The coverage: The activist group Migrant Rights on June 2 announced that Bidali had been released from detention “earlier this week,” adding that he had not received any legal counsel prior to his release...
