Pics with unveiled woman put IRGC general-turned-minister under fire

The story: Iran's Roads and Urban Development Minister Rostam Qasemi is under fire following the leaking of images of him with an unveiled woman in Malaysia on social media. The controversy has been heighted as it comes amid protests sparked by the death of a young woman in police custody over alleged “inappropriate attire.”

From the arrest of his top advisor for corruption to the threat of impeachment, the former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander has experienced multiple challenges in past months.

The coverage: US-based journalist Shahed Alavi, who is also an analyst for the London-based Iran International, tweeted the pictures of Qasemi on Oct. 31.

  • In the images, Qasemi is seen posing for photographs with a woman who is not observing the Islamic headscarf, which is mandatory in Iran. Officials and their families are expected to also follow such restrictions when traveling abroad.
