Qatar carries US ‘message’ to Tehran as IAEA chief set to visit Iran

The story: The US has sent a message to Iran, Qatar’s deputy premier and foreign minister has cryptically told a press conference in Tehran.

Conservative media in Iran view the American message as somewhat of a victory. On the other hand, more reform-leading analysts insist that the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is not a priority for the Joe Biden administration.

The coverage: Qatari Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Jan. 29 met with chief diplomat Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in the Iranian capital.

  • Without elaborating, the Qatari foreign minister stated that he was carrying a message from the US "about a topic related to the [2015 nuclear] agreement that may not be directly linked to it."

Amir-Abdollahian confirmed that he had received the message but did not say what it entailed.
