Qatar expands role in Lebanon as financial crisis deepens

The story: Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab is in Qatar to seek financial support for alleviating poverty at home through a “safety net.” The Lebanese pound has lost over 85% of its value over the past 18 months, and more than half of the country’s population currently lives under the poverty line. Qatar’s involvement in Lebanon notably comes as Doha is increasing its diplomatic efforts to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
