‘Salafist’ stabbing of Shiite clerics stirs fears of sectarian violence in Iran

The story: Iran has condemned the stabbing of several clerics in the country’s largest Shiite shrine as a “terrorist operation.” Two clergymen were killed in the rare attack in the northeastern city of Mashhad, while a third victim remains hospitalized. The authorities have identified the assailant as a foreign national belonging to the “Takfiri current,” referring to Salafist extremists who deem other Muslims— especially Shiites—as heretics.
