Murder of Saudi dissident in Beirut stirs dispute about motives

The story: Exiled Saudi political dissident Manea Al-Yami has been killed in a southern suburb of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. Yami helped establish the National Assembly Party (NAAS), an opposition group comprised of Saudi exiles, in Sept. 2020. Lebanese security forces have announced the arrest of two of the victim’s brothers on suspicion of having murdered him for “family and personal reasons.”

 The coverage: The Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) on July 10 issued a public statement on Yami’s murder the previous day.

  • The ISF statement detailed that security forces had arrested two brothers of the victim, “both whom are of Saudi nationality.” The knife used in Yami’s July 9 murder was also recovered by investigators at the time of the detentions...
