Scoop: Ex-nuclear negotiator named as Iran’s foreign minister, sources say

The scoop: Prominent former nuclear negotiator Abbas Araghchi has been appointed as Iran’s foreign minister, high-ranking sources in Tehran tell Amwaj.media. Araghchi is a veteran of the country’s diplomatic apparatus, having previously served as a deputy of former top diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif (2013-21).

Araghchi is not perceived as partisan. However, his proximity to Zarif—Reformist President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian’s effective running mate—is likely to trigger strong resistance from the conservative-dominated parliament.
