US Iran envoy's suspension sparks debate in Tehran over fate of nuclear talks

The story: US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley has been placed on unpaid leave pending an investigation into his handling of classified documents.

While the official reaction from Tehran has been muted, speculation has been rife in Iran media about the ramifications of Malley potentially being "sidelined." Some believe that his possible removal will have no impact on the future of nuclear talks with the US. However, others argue that it could make the revival of the 2015 deal even more difficult.

The coverage: In his weekly press conference on July 3, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani touched on the reports of Malley’s unpaid leave.

  • “We do not comment on the internal issues of other countries,” Kanani said, “What is important are the policies of countries, [in this case] specifically the US and not the people who represent the US government.” He added, “It seems that every individual executes the policies of his own [political] system.”
