Will Iraq heed HTS leader’s call for Shiite fighters to stay out of Syria?

The story: Amid Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham’s (HTS) lightning offensive against the Syrian government, the head of the Sunni Islamist group has called on Iraq to prevent the intervention of Iraqi Shiite fighters. In a video statement, Abu Muhammad Al-Jolani said Iraqis should have nothing to fear from the advance of Sunni militants. Despite the overture from the former Al-Qaida affiliate, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ Al-Sudani has reiterated his continued support of the Syrian government while rebuffing calls by some of his allies to intervene directly against HTS.
